Why Are My Medical Records Important?
Your medical history is a personal library of very important information that both you and your doctors need, particularly if you have multiple, chronic, or other complex illnesses. It is the blueprint of your health, encompassing diagnoses, treatments, lab results, and more.
Understanding how to access your healthcare information is important, whether you’re managing your health, helping your doctors understand your issues and coordinate your care, seeking a second opinion, or sharing your records with all your doctors and others you choose, such as your loved ones or care givers.
Obtaining your medical records empowers you to:
- Access details of your complete health history and issues whenever you need them.
- Confirm the accuracy of your records and correct any misinformation.
- Ensure you understand the advice and treatment you receive by looking back at your medical history.
- And most importantly, it empowers your doctors to avoid mistakes, which can make you sicker or even kill you, and avoid unnecessary visits, tests, and procedures, which materially increase the cost of care.
How Do I Access My Medical Records?
As you know, accessing your records is easier said than done because they are dispersed across all your care providers and not available in one place. This is compounded by the fact that your doctors use different electronic medical record (EMR) systems that can’t easily exchange records.
How Patients Typically Receive Their Records
Historically, patients have been required to contact their healthcare providers to request their medical records. This often involves a manual process of filling out forms, faxing documents, or picking up records in person. While this has long been the standard, it’s a time-consuming and frustrating approach that can leave you vulnerable in critical situations.
How MedKaz® Makes This So Much Easier
We have a much better solution. It’s called MedKaz, and it provides individuals with a single, secure way to assemble all their medical records—regardless of where they received care. It aggregates copies of the patient’s records from all their providers, and the application to manage them, on a MedKaz mini drive the patient carries on a keyring or wears as a pendant along with his house and car keys. And when you see a provider, you give it to them.
The Process Simplified: Getting Your Medical Records
So, how do you obtain your medical records using MedKaz? The process is straightforward:
- Order your MedKaz: Order your MedKaz device through its website, https://medkaz.com/. You will then receive the device in the mail.
- Activate your MedKaz. Enter all your basic information and the names and information of your care providers from whom you want to assemble your records. This is partially automated for you.
- Request your records. For each provider, you easily generate a pre-populated Request for Records and HIPAA Release, instructing them to send copies of your records to the MedKaz Server. They are obliged by law to send your records to the party you designate, in the format you designate, and within 15 days. (Our MedKaz Server’s email address via DirectMessaging is records@medkaz.hdirect.net, or regular secure email documents@medkaz.com.)
- Get your records. Your providers upload copies of your records to the MedKaz Server. In turn, the Server processes them, makes them searchable, and distributes them to you, your providers, and others you choose, such as loved ones, care givers, and researchers.
- Share your MedKaz. You and your doctors can instantly access and search these records on your MedKaz whenever you want. It’s essential to carry your MedKaz with you so you can give it to your doctors anytime you need care! You can easily do so by carrying them with your house and car keys on your key ring.
