Q What is MedKaz? I haven’t heard of it.
A
MedKaz is a groundbreaking personal health record management system for patients, not care providers. It is free to providers and doesn’t replace or conflict with your charting system. It co-exists and blends seamlessly with it.  Saves you time with each patient. Enables you to coordinate care. Increases your income.  It aggregates your patient’s complete record from all their providers in all formats — both paper and electronic — on their MedKaz mini drive along with our patented MedKaz application to manage them. They own it, carry it on their key chain, in their wallet or wear it. They give it to any care provider when they need care—anywhere, anytime, in network or out, at home or away.  Up-to-date information about your patient is waiting when you log on, and with two or three clicks you can search for and access specific records.  It even works without an Internet connection.  Your patient can add records of dependent family members to their MedKaz, as well. To learn more about MedKaz and how it works, email us at Info@medkaz.com, or phone 877 580-4500. To try it yourself with your patients, visit MedKaz For Providers Demonstration Program.

We’re not permitted to plug a USB drive into our computers. IT is afraid of viruses, malware, or ransomware.
Medkaz avoids this risk and actually is the safest way to accomplish interoperability without compromising the security of your EMR system.  You use your system and your patient’s MedKaz in parallel.  You access your records for your patient on your system; you simultaneously plug your patient’s MedKaz into a standalone, un-networked computer or tablet (they cost less than $400) to access your patient’s records from their other providers residing on your patient’s MedKaz. When you log onto your patient’s MedKaz, time-saving summary information about your patient’s health is waiting for you. As you examine your patient, you can search the contents on your patient’s MedKaz for specific records from your patient’s other current or past providers (with your patient’s permission, you can even print or send to your computer another provider’s records residing on your patient’s MedKaz).  You continue to enter your notes, etc. into your networked computer, as usual.

Q How can I be sure the MedKaz my patient gave me actually belongs to my patient?
A Couldn’t be simpler.  Simply compare the patient’s picture on the MedKaz to the face of the patient in front of you!

How does MedKaz benefit my ACO?
In two important ways. First, it is a new source of revenue and directly increases the income of all ACO members who are MedKaz Licensees. We pay providers or their employers a fee when they or their assistants upload a patient record to our Server (becoming a Licensee is free; see below). Second, as they use their patients’ MedKaz and avoid mistakes, unnecessary tests, and procedures or reduce costs in other ways, it directly increases your ACO’s Shared Savings.

Q Why bother with MedKaz? I don’t have time to fool with it.
A Once you use it, you’ll find it invaluable. It saves time with every patient and gives you the information you need to deliver better care.  You can instantly access your patient’s records from all their providers so you can coordinate their care, make fewer mistakes and avoid unnecessary tests, procedures and visits.  Moreover, it is free to you and we pay you to update it, thereby generating substantial new revenue for you or your employer (see below).

Q How much does supporting MedKaz cost me?
A Nothing. It’s free to providers. Instead of you paying us, we pay you!

Q Why should I change my charting system?
A You don’t have to. You use MedKaz alongside your charting system — even paper. MedKaz is a record management system for patients. It blends seamlessly with your system and work flow.  Copies of your records are downloaded in whatever form you keep them — whether paper or electronic — to your patient’s MedKaz.  And if you want to print or download to your computer a copy of another provider’s record that is on your patient’s MedKaz, you can do so with one click (after your patient has entered his or her password giving you permission to do so).

Q Does MedKaz disrupt my workflow?
A No. It saves you time, enhances your workflow and helps you coordinate care. When you log on, important documents are waiting for you, including a current Health Summary, a Referral Request (if created in advance by a referring provider), and a Complaint Report (if generated in advance by your patient). When you need to see specific records, a Google-like search instantly brings up every relevant record on your patient’s MedKaz.

Q How does MedKaz work?
A Patients’ records from all their providers are aggregated on their distinctive MedKaz drive. They give it to you or any provider when they need care. When you log on, the documents waiting for you are displayed as pdf documents in a browser. They bring you up to date about your patient, thereby saving you time. As you examine and treat your patient, you electronically sort, search and access their records, as needed, to understand their current and prior care from others. They, too, are displayed as pdf documents in a browser. Your assistant or we update it after each visit. Also, if your patient changes his or her personal information, such as moves, changes jobs or insurance, we send you updates for your records. To learn more email us at Info@medkaz.com, or phone 877 580-4500.

Q How long does it take to learn to use MedKaz?
A No time. It’s intuitive, virtually plug-and-play! If you can log on, perform a search and read a document in a browser, you’ll manage MedKaz easily.

Q How do records from other providers get on my patient’s MedKaz?
A Your patient requests them from their other providers using our streamlined Request Records procedure. It generates a pre-populated Record Request form and a HIPAA Release for each provider, which your patient signs and gives to their providers. Their providers send their records to us. We process them and email your patient when they are ready. They download them to their MedKaz with two clicks.

Q Who pays for MedKaz? How much is it?
A Today, patients pay. Tomorrow, employers, insurers or government probably will pay. It’s $9.00 per month the first year, this includes the MedKaz and a one year subscription to our Update & Support Service. In year two it drops to $7.00 per month for the Update & Support subscription. Family and Group Packs are less. Savings more than cover its cost.

Q Is MedKaz hard to use? My patients aren’t computer savvy.
A No. It’s user friendly and very intuitive. There are video tutorials and help guides under the Help menu, but they’ll rarely need them. If they can’t manage their MedKaz, a family member or friend usually will manage it for them.

Q Why isn’t MedKaz a smartphone app?
A  MedKaz employs the flash drive because it is the most widely available and affordable mobile device.  Even today, too many people do not have smartphones, especially among those who require frequent care. Only 68% of adults have smartphones and among critical populations who are major consumers of healthcare, far fewer do: only 27% of those over 64 years old and 50% with incomes under $30K.  Those who do frequently lose or change them. Everyone can carry a MedKaz and they are less likely to lose it or have it stolen if it is on their keychain, in their wallet or on a chain around their neck. If it makes sense in the future, we’ll put MedKaz on a smartphone, too.

Q How does MedKaz handle paper records?
A Easily! Your assistant or we attach digital fields to them. Our Server turns them into searchable pdf documents. Your patient downloads them to their MedKaz. When you search it, they pop up along with all other records meeting your criteria. You double click to open them in a browser.

Q How does MedKaz increase my revenue and income? How much?
A In one of two ways—both are free. One, you become a MedKaz Licensee. We pay you every time your assistant or interfaced-EMR system uploads a patient record to our Server. The other: you become a Distributor-Licensee. You purchase MedKaz drives wholesale, dispense them to your patients at retail, and upload records to our Server after each visit.  The spread between wholesale and retail compensates you for initially uploading your patient’s past records (this happens automatically if your EMR vendor has developed an interface with MedKaz).  A typical Distributor-Licensee PCP can annually take home an additional $50,000 simply by embracing MedKaz — $25,000 for dispensing MedKaz drives and uploading patient records to our Server, and another $25,000 for providing a backup service for your patients. These fees can run into millions of dollars annually for large practices, hospitals or ACOs who employ large numbers of care providers. To model your practice, go to medkaz.com/valuecalculator. To learn more about becoming a Licensee or Distributor-Licensee and what it entails, email Info@medkaz.com, or phone 877 580-4500.

Q Do we have to do anything extra?
A If you are a Licensee, a little — but we pay you. If you’re not a Licensee, no. After a visit, a Licensee uploads records to our Server, adds indexing data if your records are paper, and verifies them — this takes an assistant less than three minutes. If you have an EMR system and your vendor has developed an interface with MedKaz, your records upload automatically when you sign your notes. In either case, we pay you an Update fee. If you’re not a Licensee, you simply send a copy to us as you do today.

Q Can I download records to my system from my patient’s MedKaz?
A Yes. Open the record you want in your browser, your patient enters their password, you download the pdf to your computer. When your EMR vendor creates interfaces with MedKaz, you and your patients will be able to exchange records seamlessly between you; your patient will even be able to remotely send you records in advance of their visit. You can speed up this process by referring your EMR vendor to medkaz.com/api-instructions, where they can download our API, the document that tells them how to interface with our patented MedKaz application.

Q Can a patient change a record on their MedKaz?
A No one can change a signed record but your patient or you can create an Addendum to correct or explain information in the signed record. The Addendum is permanently attached to the original record and sent to both the patient’s MedKaz and your EMR system so your records match.

Q What is the Patient Record Manager (PRM)?
A It’s a free, EMR-lite application we give Licensees and Distributor-Licensees. It’s especially valuable to providers who keep paper records. It enables them to electronically manage their paper records.

Q How does the PRM work?
A When our Server downloads a record to a patient’s MedKaz, it sends an identical copy to your PRM. You use it like an EMR to electronically manage copies of records. You also use it to manage your practice, such as to identify all your patients taking a particular drug, having the same illness, affected by a drug recall or disease advisory update, etc. It has the same look, feel and functionality as MedKaz.

Q Is MedKaz secure?
A Yes, it’s password controlled to two levels: one to open the MedKaz, the second to open individual records your patient previously locked. It is encrypted and HIPAA compliant. When used as we recommend, with a standalone un-networked computer, it is the safest, most secure system available.

Q Must patients backup their MedKaz?
A Absolutely. Backing up is critical but easy! Most patients don’t want their records accessible over the Internet for fear they will be breached or stolen. We satisfy their concern by erasing their records from our Server after they have been downloaded. If they don’t have a backup and lose their MedKaz or it gets corrupted, they must reassemble and reenter their information. They can avoid this by backing up their MedKaz to their computer or an off-site service, or both. You might offer to back up your patients’ MedKaz drives for a modest annual fee. Doing so could increase your income $25,000 or so per year.

Q What if my patients lose their MedKaz or it gets corrupted?
A It’s encrypted so their records are secure if they lose it. They recover their backed up records to a new MedKaz (not just any flash drive). This ensures emergency providers will know they’ve found your medical records when they find your MedKaz.  The recovery process itself is easy and fast.

Q Can my patient’s records be breached or stolen?
A Not from us. We don’t store their records on Internet-linked servers. When they and others to whom they have authorized us to send copies of their records have downloaded them — you to your PRM or EMR system, they to their MedKaz, we erase them from our Server.
