Q What is MedKaz? I haven’t heard of it.
A
MedKaz is a revolutionary personal health record management system for patients, not care providers. It lives alongside provider record systems. There is no other system like it.  A patient’s complete record from ALL his providers in all formats — both  electronic and paper — is aggregated on his MedKaz along with the patented MedKaz application to manage them. He owns it, carries it on his key chain, in his wallet or wears it. He gives it to his care providers anytime, anywhere he requires care — no network required. He can add records of dependent family members, as well.

Q What’s the purpose of MedKaz?
A
To improve care quality, reduce care costs and bring the patient into his health equation. Care providers use it to coordinate their patients’ care, improve the quality of care and outcomes, avoid mistakes, unnecessary tests and visits, and reduce the cost of care. Patients use it to ensure their records are correct, understand their conditions and participate in their care decisions. Employers enjoy greater employee morale and productivity, fewer and smaller insurance claims and seriously lower health insurance costs. Q Why do patients need MedKaz? Their doctors have their records.
A Each doctor has her records for her patient but not all her patient’s medical records from other providers. MedKaz is the ONLY system that aggregates a patient’s complete medical record in one place. With it, any provider at home or away can understand her patient’s conditions and provide better, coordinated, lower-cost care. Equally important, it gives patients control of their records and empowers them to participate in their care decisions.

Q How does MedKaz Work?
A Patients give their MedKaz to their provider when they need care. When the provider logs on, a current Health Summary and other documents are waiting — they bring the provider up to date quickly and save time. With two or three clicks a provider can electronically sort, search for and access records, as needed, to understand their patient’s current and prior care. They or we update it for the patient after each visit. Also, if the patient changes his personal information, such as moves, changes jobs or insurance, we send these updates to his providers.

Q How do you manage all types of paper and electronic records in the same system when no one else can?
A We turn today’s conventional approach upside down! Instead of trying to standardize how providers keep records, we standardize how we manage the disparate records providers keep. We turn every record, paper or electronic, into a searchable pdf document that can be read in a browser, then aggregate them on a single device, a MedKaz.

Q What if an employee loses his MedKaz or it gets corrupted?
A It’s encrypted so his records are secure. He recovers his backed up records to a new MedKaz. For his protection, a backup can only be recovered to a MedKaz drive. This ensures emergency providers know they’ve found their patient’s medical records when they find his MedKaz on his key chain, in his wallet or around his neck.

Q Can records on MedKaz be breached or stolen?
A Not from us. We don’t store patient records on Internet-linked servers. When they and others to whom they have authorized us to send copies of their records have downloaded them, we erase them from our Server. In addition, the MedKaz itself is password-controlled to two levels.

Q Will care providers use a patient’s MedKaz? They’re so busy.
A MedKaz is new to providers, too, and at first they may hesitate to use it. However, when they see how it benefits them and their patients, they embrace it.  MedKaz enables them to instantly access their patient’s records from all their providers so they can provide better, coordinated, lower-cost care, make fewer mistakes and avoid unnecessary tests, procedures and visits. It also generates significant new revenue for them, saves time with every patient, and it’s free to them.

Q How much can doctors make supporting MedKaz—enough to gain their support?
A Absolutely. A typical PCP who dispenses and updates a patient’s MedKaz can take home as much as $50,000 more annually as a Distributor-Licensee.  This new revenue can run into millions of dollars annually for large practices, hospitals, or ACOs who employ large numbers of care providers. Providers such as Specialists who merely upload copies of records typically are Licensees. They earn less but enjoy increased revenue, too. There is no charge to become either a Licensee or Distributor-Licensee, and no capital investment is required.

Q What’s the MedKaz Business Model?
A The MedKaz business model aligns everyone’s interests. It is simple, unique and financially self-sustaining. The consumer/patient acquires a MedKaz, subscribes annually with us for our Update & Support Services and every time he sees a care provider, we pay the provider a fee to upload records of the encounter to our Server for processing and downloading to his MedKaz. (If they opt to not upload records, they send them to us and we upload them—but we do not pay them.) The patient may purchase his MedKaz from a retailer such as Amazon.com or HRC directly, and personally pay for the annual subscription. In the future, as more providers become Distributors-Licensees, he may purchase his MedKaz from his provider.  Or, he may receive MedKaz as a health/wellness benefit from his employer/insurer who gives him a MedKaz and pays for his annual subscription. In either case, MedKaz does not require government subsidies.

Q We’re an employer. Where do we fit in this equation?
A If you offer MedKaz as a new health/wellness benefit, the quality of care your employees receive will go up; your health insurance claims and costs will go down. Your employees will enjoy improved care. You will enjoy the material dollar savings.

Q We’re satisfied with the wellness benefits we offer. Why add another?
A Because MedKaz generates real savings; most others don’t (RAND’s recent study concluded that savings from wellness plans are “statistically insignificant”). This probably happens because most wellness benefits require employees to change their behavior – like stop smoking or eating – which most can’t or won’t do. In contrast, MedKaz relies on employees behaving normally. When they are sick, they give their doctor their MedKaz. If the information on it enables their doctor to avoid a test, procedure or mistake, you save money. Your ROI may even be greater than any item in your capital budget!

Q If we want to consider adding MedKaz as a health/wellness benefit, what do we do?
A First, we’ll design a test involving groups of employees so you can evaluate employee responses and its financial impact. If satisfied with the results, you adopt it as a health/wellness benefit and invite all employees to participate. You then give each participating employee a MedKaz. To ensure they use it, you offer incentives tied to milestones. One would be when they activate it; a second, when they request records from their providers; a third, when a care provider uploads an encounter record — or sends it to us. A fourth can be to reduce their deductible, co-pay or insurance premium. We believe your results will far exceed the results you currently are getting from most of your ongoing health/wellness benefits.

Q Will care providers know what to do when our employees give them their MedKaz?
A Instructions come up when they log on. But we also will hold informational meetings and webinars for care providers in communities where you have groups of employees, to introduce MedKaz to them, explain how it benefits them as well as your employees, and to answer their questions. They also can call our special Provider Support line if they have problems or questions.

Q How much does MedKaz cost?
A The first year annual subscription purchased by a consumer is $9.00 per month; it includes the MedKaz and annual Update & Support Services. In year two it drops to $7.00 per month for Update & Support Service.  It is less for the less for Family Packs. For employers, we design deeply discounted custom programs to meet each company’s special needs. The cost can be as low as $50 per participating employee per year — like other benefits, it‘s unlikely all employees will participate. This cost is easily recouped if one test is avoided. If procedures such as MRIs, CT Scans, a day in an ICU, or a night in the hospital are avoided, your returns will be huge.
